During the last one hour, some buying and short covering coming in ahead of expiry, cutting the overall losses,The main 30-share BSE index closed down 146.10 points at 15,727.85, with 18 of its components declining. The benchmark, which fell 0.6 percent on Tuesday, opened relatively flat and dipped as much as 1.3 percent on the day.
Banking sector is under pressure because of concerns over asset quality, while the credit growth is lower.
Jindal Steel and Power (JNSP.NS) was the top loser, shedding more than 7.1 percent

The Sensex fell more than 50 points in the afternoon trade amid volatility, dragged down by index heavyweights Reliance, TCS and SBI. ICICI Bank, ONGC and Bharti Airtel too were under pressure. The index was down 62 points at 15,909.02 while the Nifty fell 21.4 points to 4,757.60.

Among largecaps, shares of DLF, Cipla, Coal India, Tata Motors, Jaiprakash Associates, Power Grid Corp, Axis Bank and IDFC topped the selling list, falling 2-3%.

Index heavyweights Reliance Industries, TCS, ONGC, Infosys, ICICI Bank, BHEL, Bharti Airtel and State Bank of India declined 0.4-0.8%.
The Indian markets remained positive on support coming in from buying in majorly in sectors like technology, capital goods, metal, realty and oil & gas. Heavyweights like Infosys, RIL, Bharti Airtel, TCS, HDFC Bank, L&T and ICICI Bank led the markets higher. The Sensex and the Nifty were trading around 15970 and 4775 levels respectively. The market breadth was strong.

All the 13 sector are trading higher, except BSE HC down by 0.12%. The top most gainers were BSE TECH up by 2.03%, BSE IT up by 1.82% and BSE CG up by 1.24%.

Among 30 Sensex stocks 26 were in green, Gainers - Bharti Airtel gained by 3.78%, Hero Motocorp gained by 3.32% and Tata Steel gained by 2.85%. Losers - Cipla down by 0.48%, Hindalco down by 0.29% and ONGC down by 0.02%.

The rupee touched a record low for the second day in a row on Tuesday as both foreign and domestic investors snapped up dollars to reduce exposure to India's cooling economy.
The currency has lost 4.8 percent of its value against the dollar in the last four weeks and 16 percent so far this year.
Investors took fright on Monday when government data showed India's industrial production fell 5.1 percent in October, the first monthly fall in more two years and far more than expected.
